MUSIC MONDAY- LEDISI

Ledisi Anibade Young ( /ˈlɛdɨsiː/) is an American recording artist, singer-songwriter, record producer, CEO and actress. Her first name means "to bring forth" or "to come here" in Yoruba.[1] Ledisi is known for her jazz influenced vocals. In 1995, Ledisi formed the group known as Anibade. After unsuccessfully trying to get the group signed to a major label, she formed LeSun Records with Sundra Manning. Along with her group Anibade, Ledisi released an album entitled Take Time. The album gained major airplay from local radio stations.

In 2000, Ledisi released her first album, entitled Soulsinger: The
Revival. Ledisi and her group toured in 2001, performing various shows.[1] In 2002, Ledisi released her second album, Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue. The album won her an award for "Outstanding Jazz Album" at the California Music Awards.

In 2007, Ledisi signed a major record deal with Verve Forecast and released her third album in August of that year, entitled Lost & Found, which sold almost 217,000 copies and earned her two Grammy nominations, including one for Best New Artist.[2] In 2008, Ledisi released her Christmas album, It's Christmas.

In 2009, Ledisi released her fourth album Turn Me Loose, which earned her 2 Grammy nominations. (PROVIDED BY WIKIPEDIA)

MUSIC MONDAY- Jhene Aiko

If you take Mya and Cassie, combine the two and add a touch of exotic essence to the formula, Jhene Aiko would be the product. With the release of her mixtape "Sailing Souls" in March of 2011, Jhene Aiko is taking the underground music wolrd by storm! But make no mistake, Aiko is nowhere near a stranger to the music buisness, she has been exposed to the industry since the early age of just five years old, having two older sister's in the one hit wonder girl group "Gyrl."
As luck hit she later landed on her own singing contract and became the opening act on the "Scream 3" tour which also headlined by her cousin "Lil Fizz" group "B2K" at the age of 16.
Her cd "Sailing Souls" has a nice smooth vibe, distinctive diverse beats and catchy hooks. The cd quickly draws you in, making you pay attention to more than just the nice sounds and cute chorus lines. Although Aiko may not be a big name in the music bizz, she collaborates with some of todays hottest hit makers such as Miguel, Gucci Mane, Drake, and the king of controversy himself Kanye West.
With the ease of her soft voice, you'll quickly be attracted to the calming smooth track "Higher" on the cd, where she compares not only her love but herself to the affect of being "under the influence"...I'll let you fill in that blank ;). Her voice may not be as strong or be packed with a loud punch but it is striking and moving in songs lke "You vs Them" where she touches on giving into the popular demand of fame while recognizing the importance of a loving relationship. Check her out and tell us what you think about our artist for Music Monday Jhene Aiko.

WILL WOMAN EVER REALLY RUN THE WORLD?!

Question of the day, will woman ever REALLY run the world? There are so many things that are changing in our society these days, from our community’s exception of homosexuals to having a black man run the country. But the real question still stands; will woman ever be able to RUN the world? What would it take for that to happen? Are our young girls even being shaped to do so? Would people even want that to be? What do you think?

Music Monday - Artist Pick of the Week

Unless you have been living under a rock, by now you've heard the hot sounds from fairly new music artist, Miguel. Miguel is a hot young singer on the rise with his debut singles "All I Want Is You" and current single "Sure Thing". His debut album "All I Want Is You" released in December 2010 consists of 13 songs(11 full songs and 2 interludes) total.

As some know and as many are still learning Miguel is a Los Angeles, California native, and biracial product of a Mexican father and African American mother. Just like his diverse background, his album includes a diverse mix of music. His sound derives from genres such as R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop, and a slight Reggae feel, he collaborates with other artists like J. Cole on the hit "All I Want Is You."

With a fresh sound and "real" artistic touch Miguel displays his vocal range variety, holding the exact dose the music industry is missing! With songs like "Girls Like You", "Girl With The Tattoo" and "Vixen" one might think the album is catered to only the male audience and their perspective on relationships and sex, but that is NOT the case! Both sexes can truly relate to the songs on the album because everyone can relate to lust or love.

I have great hopes for this young hopeful and I think if he continues making music the way he is now, he will be headed down a road of great success! by Brandon Bethea

>>>>>BREAKING NEWS>>>>>>>

?CONSPIRACY? SECTION

So the US has fullfilled another successful mission of organized crime by taking the life of Osama Bin Laden. Ok, so is it just me or did they not find Mr. Laden a couple of years ago? #Weird

And his death date is mysteriously the same date as Hiltlers, come on. Lets not be so obvious next time guys, but whether they did or did not, everytime the U.S has breaking news there is some type of devious MO(motive) behind it.

Is it me or am I the only person tired of hearing the U.S blaim 911 on Iraq, Al-Qaeda or any other third world place, person other than a board member in the Congress, Senate or hell even the House!?

Now lets digest the situation. The US can find anyone they want, anytime they want. So why was it so hard to find Osama Bin Laden? Another thing what is the purpose of the man wanting the leader of a dry desert land? Lets try oil for one, sacred land for two (Mesotopomania) and the fact that he was probably one leader that would not agree with this new world order going into affect.

On www.cnn.com they have been rolling live footage of citizens chanting over a mans death. Is this respect for humanity? Doesn't anyone have to go to work in the morning? The arrogence of the US is sickening and needs to find light in things that uplift the people.

What is your take on this issue?

Do you agree with the celebration of Osama Bin Laden's death?

How will you make things different?

WTF?

Where is the future headed with all of the crazy matters of politics, world hunger, lack of unity and chaotic natural and manmde disasters? One thing about life is that you live in it everyday, without even knowing you are living in it.

So many people take life for granted and struggle with the most simple answer to every problem, some discover what that problem is and suceed in their life's journey. But that is the difference between the doers and the fakers.

Spring Break!!

Everyone Spring Break has started for many! It is time to relax, recuperate and evolve from last semester. Do yourself a favor during this break doesn’t think about class, or grades! Think about you, and what you want to accomplish during your spring break.

During the long dreadful weeks of class we lose ourselves because we clutter our minds with keeping up with class. Well like the movie "Mallrats" say, "Forget about that shit and do what your suppose to!" Life is too short to dwell on the past so don’t panic just adjust your future.

Flying Cars!!! Can We Afford Gas First!!

Ok! Attention all girls and guys we are entering the future as we speak! Flying cars are in the making and will be landing on grounds near us as soon as 2012! Created by a graduate of MIT, Carl Dietrich and the Terifugia Company they named the new age planes "the light-sport aircraft", these evolved aviation creations are about to hit the markets as the new "quick, short trips travel plane".

How does it work? Since 2006, according to the Washington Post, "They came up to make a standard light aircraft with wings that fold up, and tuck in close to the body of the plane for driving or extending to full wingspan for flying in just 20 seconds".

In a nation that can barely afford gas, what would make any of the investors and creators think that anyone would need a "skycar" as some may call it. As usual when the government wants to play with a new toy they will say anything to get your ears to light up. This time the pilots are agreeing, due to previous flying surveys it is shown that "pilots do not fly more often for four reason: weather, in high ownership cost, limited mobility on the ground and long door to door travel times."

Problems? Well, the first problem is economic adjustment to the "skycar" itself, transitioning from the ground into the sky periodically, and landing instead of parking. It also needs regulatory clearance from many agencies including the FAA and the Nation Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

We are to attend driving school for 40 hours within a two week period to be properly approved to maneuver a vehicle, wouldn't you think more time would be required to fly a plane. Well it is not! It actually takes 20 hours less to become a certified pilot for skycars. Does this seem safe to you?

If all approves are made the production of skycars will proceed as planned toward the end of this year or early next year. Share your thought about the "SKYCARS?" Do you think it will benefit the earth? Share and post your comments.

'Crazy' - Gnarls Barkley cover by: Ari Lennox

X&I MUSIC

New Voices 'Let Us Out'

X&I MUSIC
Inspiration took place this morning as I browsed the YouTube world. My ears were awakened by a certain post of a soulful eclectic voice singing familiar lyrics by Gnarls Barkley, 'Crazy'. Hearing her fresh sound powerfully hit my ears.

In the meantime my mind wondered, thinking about how lame the music industry is becoming as a whole. From contracted deals to the radio station channels, it is all a conglomerated mess. The people are yearning for "real artist" to reveal "real music".

Everyday on the dreadful hour and a half commute I must suffer through; I travel from the Accokeek Maryland boonies to the gritty streets of Baltimore. If I don’t pull out my oldie but goody cd's I am restricted to listen to approximately 6 radio stations all in which lack originality!

WKYS 93.9, WPGC 95.5, WHUR 96.3,WIHT - Hot 99.5, Magic 102.3, and I only have one station in which can inspire me in positive speaking which is WXGG 104.1. Now, 3 out of 6 of these stations, WKYS, WPGC and Hot 99 basically play the same music and always have, but because they have minimized the need for Dj's by creating playlist to take their places they now continuously play the same songs but at the same time undermining the whole purpose of the DJ. The other 2 out of 6 are more sophisticated stations, but they play the same throwback tunes as well.

What is wrong with experiencing voices like Ari Lennox, and new sounds from upcoming phenom rap groups like Godsilla! Our community is going through rough times and music is our outlet, it which should be positively moving in it's own way.

Take us back to the days of Marvin Gay when music felt good and had meaningful lyrics. Now-a-days we just get a bunch of hoopla delivery that force artist to promote sex, drugs, violence, or unpleasant lyricism to even sale an album. Do they think we like filling our aura with that non sense all the time!?

A fine example of the industry killing music is the protest that had taken place for over a year. Lupe Fiasco's fans started a movement and protest at Atlantic Records headquarters due to the 2 setbacks of his album release. It is called the 'Lasers', which promotes self motivation and liberation from suppression.

His fans feel that he uplifts through his lyrics and speaks truth, and Atlantic Records should not be able to take that away from the consumer in which keeps their business abroad. So they protested, and his album is scheduled to release March 2011. This is today.

Would that not be a similar relation to the radio stations? If everyone chose to stop listening to the radio, how would it shake the industry?

The approach the corporate have taken with radio stations it does not seem they truly care what the people; the consumer; the community; the listener wants or needs. They have forced everyone from children to adult music lovers to sit and listen to non-sense.

According to Webster conglomeration is to bring together into a cohering mass. With that being said the industry has and will conglomerate everyone's likings through lack of option if nothing is done. Conglomeration limits the voices that can speak to a mass amount of people publicly, and creates a mainstream line in which excludes originality.

Have you ever been in class and created an assigned project and was scolded by your teacher because the result was too creative? Well that is the suppression many great artist go through, and one of the main reason most fall. Do you like the direction the Music industry is headed? If not speak out!

Fever in the Mid-West, Wis. Republicans Garner Criticism Over Union-Busting Bill

X&I POLITICS

Governor Scott Walker (R-Wis.) is waging a political war with the free labor unions in Wisconsin through a sweeping bill that was introduced by the state’s Republican controlled legislature. The union-busting legislation snatches the collective bargaining rights—the ability to negotiate pensions and salaries—from public-sector unions across the state.

In response to the governor’s proposal, 14 state senators have since fled the state—refusing to vote on the measure, fearing that with Republicans controlling the state Senate, the measure would likely pass. Thousands of Wisconsinites have flooded the state Capitol building to protest the pending legislation. But despite their unrest, Governor Walker has insisted that the legislation must pass in order to offset the state’s $3 billion deficit—a deficit that some argue was caused by Walker when he decided to give tax cuts to Wisconsin’s wealthiest business owners.

On Wednesday, the conservative governor was embarrassingly exposed by a prank phone call to his office. In a conversation that he believed to be having with billionaire David Koch, Governor Walker revealed that he considered luring the 14 missing senators back to the state by telling them that he would be “willing to sit down and talk” with them. He went on to say that once the senators returned to the Capitol building, Senate Republicans would declare a quorum (number of people required in order to conduct official Senate business) and force a vote on the bill.
Immediately after the prank call went viral, the governor’s office released a statement acknowledging the mishap by saying that “The Governor takes many calls every day …”

It would be commendable of Governor Walker if he was, in fact, taking the higher fiscal ground by making the necessary cuts in order to balance Wisconsin’s budget. But this bill, introduced by the Republican-controlled legislature is a transparent attempt to dismantle the very powerful and Democratic-leaning unions in the state of Wisconsin (President Obama carried the state in 2008).

The disquieting protests are spreading like fever across the mid-west. Demonstrations have begun to spring up in places like Ohio, Indiana as well as Los Angeles. It is no secret that Governor Walker is a part of a larger scheme to gain control of the White House in 2012. Newly-elected Republicans, catapulted into office by the tea party, are all committed to making President Obama a one-term president by any means necessary.

Ultimately, this affects the backbone of our economy and our nation—the middle class. History credits labor unions for the launch of the middle class. During the late nineteenth century it was labor unions who gave underpaid workers a voice that was loud enough to demand livable wages and acceptable working conditions. Consequently, the working poor jumped on the train of upward mobility and into what we now refer to as the middle class.

What do you think? Is Governor Walker balancing the budget? Or, is this a classic case of middle class union-busting?

17 Baltimore City Police Officer's Arrested.. How does the Community Feel?

X&I COMMUNITY

Today the topic is: Are Baltimore city police officers really for protecting the people? Or do they pursue their career for self protection and benefit?

Yesterday morning 17 Baltimore police officers were arrested due to holding private relationships with surrounding Baltimore towing companies and are being accused of possible extortion.

Many Baltimore residents shake their heads in shame and embarrassment while our so-called responsible protectors are getting caught up in community mess. Instead of making situations easier for their residents, according to locals the police actually make things more difficult, and cause more problems.

What are the main goals of our police departments? It seems as though everywhere you go 'cops' are not labeled as residents favorites but we all know their job does not entail pleasing the people, it involves protecting and serving, or intervening situations so things do not escalate.

Speaking to some Morgan students many complained about negative incounters they experianced with Baltimore Police officers. "One day I was at home and a police officer came to my house and demanded for me to pass him the car keys because of a situation my brother was dealing with, I told him he needed a search warrent and he snatched the keys and left anyway." Totally violating by-laws and her rights.

Another student says, when it was snowing her car spun around and she slid into a guard rail, when she got out the car to get help, and Baltimore P.O drove slam past her without even a hesitation to turn around to help. Now thats not protecting or serving, thats driving by.

Question? If certain people did not make it a business of putting drugs on the street would it be a heavy commodity in our communities? We as a people suffer enough on a daily basis just to make ends meat, we dont need our so-called protecters screwing up, leaving the consequences for the community to reap.

If America wants things to get better, lead by example and keep a tight grip on the authority to set an example. Because by the looks of things hustlers are not the only one trying to make it.

Fashion Week Updates- The Row, Marc Jacob and Thom Browne

X&I Fashion

Fashion: Yesterday was not only the Grammy's but also the debuting runway show for the 2011 Fall runway looks from, 'The Row', by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Marc Jacobs, Betsy Johnson and Thom Browne. Three collections that catch the eye because of their wonderful eye for pattern, detail and cohesivness.

'The Row' featured a lot of oversized pants suits, skirts and tailored fitting trenches! Lacking color in both resort and fall collections, they added a flare of fur and animal prints to add a splash of fiercness to their 2011 runway display.

Marc Jacobs sprayed his 2011 fall collection with pocka dots from the neck down to the stockings. He re-created an eveloved world from the 20's displaying flapper garments with structure and a new form of fitting the womans' anatonmy. He debuted his round collar pocka dot wovens, highwaist skirts and poof tweeded blazers that cohesivly yelled po-po-po-pocka face po-po pocka face.(jk)

Thom Browne showed his edgy side with woman for this fall's collection. Bringing a new spice to the fashion table Browne used plaid patterns as his theme, along with lots of cool layers with suits and furs and bright vibrant colors. Risky, Brown shows oval shaped shawls, long plaid trenches, dresses and skirts in a more androgenous view for woman.

Fashion Friday! The Grammy Approach

Last year many went home with their ultimate Grammy prize, leaving with a new reputation and "trohphy man" to compliment there last years accomplishments.

This year there are a lot of new artist up for nominations for the 53rd Annual 2011 Grammy Awards. Nominated this year, Arcade Fire, Eminem, Cee Lo Green, Lady Gaga, Miranda Lambert, and Katy Perry are just a few names of popular nominees.

But the big question remains to stand until February 13, 2011 (53rd Annual Grammy live), who will wear what on the carpet? Looking at the red carpet overview of last year Grammy Awards the most outrages look will be found from Lady Gaga! What outrages fashion will she pull from her sleeve this year?

In 2010 Gaga wore a fairtale inspired dress by Giorgio Armani Prive walking and prancing on the red carpet as if she had on a little black dress. Yes, these dramatic fashion statement just shows a little piece of just how crazy and creative it can get in the Gaga world.

What do you think we will see Lady Gaga rock on the red carpet this year?

Illiterate or Alliterate

The topic today is LITERACY, something our community is totally lacking, as if we go to school everyday for 18 years for no reason at all. Yesterday I had a discussion with a very close friend that does not enjoy reading. Now,it is okay if reading is not your number 1 hobby, but many forget that reading is fundamental and now-a-days a privilege.

Millions of people jerk the meaning of illiterate and alliterate around with improper notation. According to Webster'S Dictionary illiterate is defined as unable to read and write or an illiterate group, having or demonstrating very little or no education. Webster then reveals the definition of alliterate as being capable to read but rarely CHOOSES to do so. That means we have the option we just dont exercise it.

So what are the reasons people despise written words so dramatically? Monique Alexander age 21, a former student of University of Maryland of College Park and currently a Pharmacy Technitian as her career, battled in words til her death to justify the real reason she chooses not to read stating "she just doesnt like too", or brushed it off with a simple "who cares", she even stated continuously that I could simply read to her. Meaning she would rather listen.

In reply to that, EVERYONE should care. If it were not for reading society would be lost. We would have no direction, no knowledge, or unable to retrieve information that keeps us safe. Yes, i kno the media is taking over your minds through pretty pictures and technology which has no neccessity for in depth reading, but a quick skim to retrieve only the important details.

Quick, fast and in a hurry is what society has developed into. We have become so busy that we don't stop to read a simple things like a street sign on the road or a book off of the shelf, but yet ask all types of questions.

Have you ever worked in retail and the store is having a huge sale and the costumer asks you "what are the sales today", as if the sales are not plastered in bright colors around the store. This is a perfect example of how we have become products of society, we would rather ask someonelse before finding out for ourselves.

Is it cool to lack observation of your surroundings being completly 'duh' about situations or is it lazy? Students have the opprotunity of recieving education and waste it by choosing to be alliterate. Instead of embracing their literacy, they encourage younger generations to become illiterate.

The cycle continues, until the cycle is confronted we will be robots caught in the headlights of a fast pace life, unable to appritiate moments until we wake up!
